10 Songs You Didn't Realise Sample Other Songs
9. Check It Out - Will.I.Am & Nicki Minaj
For what seems like a lifetime, Nicki Minaj has been a charts mainstay in contemporary popular music.
It wasn't always this way, though, as Minaj often featured on other artists' songs before achieving significant solo success with 2010's Pink Friday. During Minaj's ascent to pop-rap royalty, the decision to jump on a track with Black-Eyed Pea Will.I.Am resulted in a tune that samples Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles.
The song itself is somewhat forgettable, as it is simply so in keeping with the artists' previous works. A prominent feature of the track, however, was the frequent vocal 'oh-a oh' flourishes that began in the late '70s Buggles hit.
The sample featured is both fleeting, yet intrusive. Check It Out isn't a tune that relies on the sample --far from it-- with each feeling more like additions to the song's percussion than the melody. It fits, and even feels natural, so many won't realise that the clip's origins are from decades ago. It is, however so overused that it'll be jammed in your head all day whether you like it or not.
In truth, the inclusion is so frequent that it's hard to not be annoyed by it once the song's ~4 minute runtime comes to an end.
