10. The Smiths Suffer Little Children
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkYlQjk1LWk Appearing on the band's self-titled debut album, Suffer Little Children details the gruesome case of the Moors murders which took place on Saddleworth Moor, Manchester between 1963 and 1965. Morrissey was inspired to write the song after reading the book Beyond Belief: A Chronicle Of Murder And Its Detection by Emlyn Williams. The book is a semi-fictionalized account of the crime, speculating on the killers' motives and potential thoughts leading up to the event. At the time of its release the song didn't go without controversy. Three of the five victims are named in the lyrics of the song: John Kilbride, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans. This lead to the song and album being banned from several retailers, though Morrissey later became friends with Lesley Ann Downey's mother, and she recognized the band's noble intentions.
