10 Songs You Need To Add To Your Halloween 2020 Playlist
5. Boris the Spider - The Who
When the Who first got the ball rolling, they were no different than the other acts playing in the Mod scene. Though the band would go on to grand ambitions like Tommy and Quadrophenia, the songs on their first few records showed them mining the R&B inflected sounds of their peers at a volume that could shatter your eardrums. However, things took a bit of a twist when John Entwistle showed up with a song.
After the band decided to take a more democratic approach to song-writing with A Quick One, Entwistle's first contribution to a Who record is one of the spookiest songs of the early '60s. Going from one chord to the next, Entwistle makes a simple story of him trying to kill a spider in his house sound utterly barmy, culminating in one of the first growls heard in rock music on the chorus.
This song was already an oddity at the time, but the bridge is where the fun-filled horror really comes in. Going between just two notes, Entwistle's "Creepy Crawly" refrain is enough to make the chills go up and down your spine every time you listen. The Who may have had a set formula in the early days, but songs like this showed that they had only just started to tap into their potential.
