10 Strongest Voices In Alternative Rock Music
6. Chino Moreno
When Deftones released their debut album Adrenaline (1995), the musical landscape was ever changing with new sounds and ideas regularly being introduced into rock and metal. This was a time when the grunge music scene had exploded at the beginning of the decade, and when a year earlier in 1994 Korn had released their debut album, laying the blueprint for what would come to be considered as nu-metal.
Deftones arrived hard on their heals, blending the influence of hip-hop and rap metal bands such as Rage Against The Machine with the heaviness of groove metal such as Pantera and an eighties dark-pop sound from the likes of The Cure and Depeche Mode. Singer Chino Moreno had an unquestionable uniqueness to his voice, perfectly able to switch from singing haunting melodies to ferocious screams. When their second album Around The Fur arrived (1997), they established themselves as heavy music royalty, before album number three White Pony (2000), placed them at the very top of the alternative music scene.
Deftones continue to tour and release new music over 20 years later, while Chino has also flexed his creative muscle in a number of side projects, including the heavily eighties-influenced synth-heavy band Crosses - as well creating mellow experimental sounding post-rock, in the bands Team Sleep and Palms.
