10 Surprising Instrumental Tracks You NEED To Hear

6. Life In Technicolor - Coldplay

Coldplay's approach to 2008's Viva La Vida was much different than their previous efforts. Instead of the serene alternative rock ballads of their earlier work, the band pulled out all the stops and decided to deliver a truly epic collection of songs that contained elements of genres as diverse as Afrobeat and classical music. "Life In Technicolor" serves as the perfect way to introduce the listener to these new changes.

While it is unusual for a band to start off an album with an instrumental, this track is a slowburner that helps build the album's momentum right out of the gate. The effects-laden guitar begins ever so subtly before going into a bouncy riff.

As the track builds, the band continues to add on more and more layers like glistening pianos and even a choir to help create more sonic tension.

The gradual crescendo helps give the album a certain gravitas along with giving the fans a hint at more epic things to come. It's like seeing a single frame of a painting and then peeling back further to see the true work of art in front of you. The perfect welcome mat for Coldplay's most ambitious record.
