10 Surprisingly Heavy Songs By Non-Metal Bands

7. Dead Star – Muse

Muse have taken on a variety of sounds throughout their career, ranging from hard rock to classical and electronica. Though they've always had a reputation for being loud (especially when playing live), most rock fans wouldn't label them as a heavy band.

‘Dead Star’ – which was written as a promotional single for the compilation album Hullabaloom – showcases Muse at their most aggressive with its pounding riffs and pulsing basslines.

As catchy as the chorus is, it would be wrong to describe ‘Dead Star’ as accessible. Matt Bellamy’s vocals are regularly distorted, creating a slightly maddening flavour that heightens the track’s sense of rage.

It’s a shame Muse don’t play this underrated gem more often because it’s got a wicked atmosphere and plenty of punch. For those less familiar with Muse’s more obscure work, ‘Dead Star’ is definitely one to check out.
