10 Surprisingly Heavy Songs By Non-Metal Bands
2. X.Y.U. – The Smashing Pumpkins
Despite being labelled as an alternative rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins have never shied away from experimentation.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the best example of their ability to write diverse music, and whilst there are several surprisingly heavy tracks on the album (such as 'Zero' and 'Bodies'), ‘X.Y.U.’ is the standout when it comes to flat-out rage.
Billy Corgan lets loose on an ex-girlfriend and delivers a pained vocal performance riddled with snarls and screams. His delivery is complemented by the grimy instrumental which purposefully feels a little messy. This is especially noticeable during the closing section when the lead-guitar line sounds almost improvised.
For those metalheads who’ve never given The Smashing Pumpkins a chance, ‘X.Y.U.’ will make for a pleasant surprise. From beginning to end, this seven-minute number never lets up.
