10 Terrible Rock Albums (That Aren't As Bad As You Think)
5. The 2nd Law - Muse
As the '00s opened up, Muse seemed like they were going to be the one band to bring rock back in full force. While every other band was taking either a garage rock approach or selling out to pop radio, these guys created monumental soundscapes that pleased both the alternative crowd as well as the arena rock fans who wanted something to sing along to.
Then they went electronica...
When "Madness" first came out, many Muse fans were up in arms for what they saw as their favorite band leaving their sound behind. Many were bracing for impact for this album to suck, but The 2nd Law ended up going quite well all things considered.
There are still plenty of rocking moments like on "Panic Station" and "Survival," along with more out-there experiments like their attempt at a Bond movie soundtrack on "Supremacy."
It's not like we didn't see this coming either, with the previous album The Resistance being laced with electronic assistance here and there. In fact, some of the electronic led songs like "Follow Me" and "Animals" still hold up today as genuine oddities in the band's catalog.
The 2nd Law might seem like a little experiment the band had to get out of their system, but if you take the record for what it is, it's still one of their more engaging listens.
