10 Terrible Rock Bands With One Incredible Album

8. Look What the Cat Dragged In - Poison

In the grand history of hair metal, Poison arrived at a bit of a strange time. Though the look of Bret Michaels circa 1989 has become synonymous with the sillier sides of the genre, their arrival in the mid '80s was the point where the poodle haired bands on Sunset weren't treated like a punchline just yet. Before people like Winger and Warrant became mainstream stars a few years later, Look What the Cat Dragged In was a lot more fun than people realized.

First of all, let's get one thing out of the way right off the bat: this is by no means a great metal album. Even with the growl of the title track, this is some of the tamest metal that would have legends like Black Sabbath laughing at it. As far as hard rock and power pop is concerned though, it's not too shabby at all, with Bret Michaels having a commanding presence and CC Deville's guitar having a lot more grit than you'd come to expect.

Sure, it's not necessarily on the level as Motley Crue or even Twisted Sister from around the same time, but it's not trying to be. Poison was always about the party atmosphere, and this is the kind of mindless energy that made the '80s so good to look back on. Above all else, it's fun, and who says that metalheads can't have some fun every now and again?
