10 Terrible Songs By Great Artists
3. Dig Down - Muse
Muse have always prided themselves on being a bit left of centre than your average rock and roll band. Despite the endless parades of fans willing to compare them to Radiohead, the grand scope of Matt Bellamy's riffs are in a class by themselves away from Thom Yorke's introspective output. Even though each Muse album might be something different, Dig Down was the harbinger of bad things on the horizon.
Written as a departure into more synth heavy territory, the crux of this tune isn't actually all that bad if you decide to focus on the basic melody. When you strip everything down though, this is one of the most bland pieces of music that these guys have ever pressed to plastic, sounding like a Billie Eilish track if she weren't trying and listened to a whole bunch of synthwave.
While not all albums have to start with a barnburner right out of the gate, this is Muse, the band that have made their bread and butter off of some of the most grandiose statements they can muster. These suspicions were all but confirmed when Simulation Theory actually came out, feeling a lot more like style over substance. As much as Muse like to take chances, to see them muzzle themselves like this is almost difficult to watch for a hardcore fan.
