10 Terrible Songs By Great Artists
2. Zombie Zoo - Tom Petty
Even with 2 decades under his belt when entering the '90s, Tom Petty was about to have one of the most inspired periods of his career. While records like Let Met Up (I've Had Enough) were a bit more hit and miss when it comes to his central discography, his solo outings like Full Moon Fever and Wildflowers are still some of the most eclectic pieces of work he has ever laid down. So why the hell did he even entertain the idea of putting something like Zombie Zoo in the mix?
As far as a Petty song is concerned, this has all the elements, as long as you don't take into account the bland as hell chorus and some of the most goofy lyrics Petty would ever write, from lines about looking like Boris Karloff to the titular zoo of the undead. Even when he defended it by saying he had written it for Roy Orbison, this is the kind of retro song that looks more pitiable than nostalgic.
What's even worse was the fact that Petty was sitting on the song Waiting for Tonight, which would have made for a much better album closer for this record with the Bangles providing backup. But I guess the musical gods wanted the musical version of a '60s sitcom theme song instead.
