10 Things Metallica Need To Get Right On The New Album
7. Let Robert Trujillo Have A 'Moment'
As he's proved in his years of touring and subsequent live performances, bassist Robert Trujillo is more than capable of playing the compositions the messianic Cliff Burton laid down, as well as Jason Newsted's contributions to the band over his decade of fan-divided playing. Let's be clear I'm not saying Trujillo is better or anything close to Mr. Burton, however I am saying for a band that relied so heavily on portions of their set being devoted to bass solos, and having songs be introduced through tenacious bass-powered riffs, we're yet to actually see Trujillo truly shine. Sure you can hear him in the mix just fine, which is more than you can say for Newsted's first on-album appearance on Justice, but where's something close to Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), or the intro to My Friend of Misery? Cliff's godlike fingerprints are all over the bands' earlier work, yet even after he passed, Newsted's rare song-credits still allowed him that gorgeously haunting intro of the latter. Trujillo played with Ozzy, and the man can slap a bass with enough power to rupture the inner organs of a sentient race from a neighbouring planet. Let him have a moment or two we'll all remember for decades to come.
