2. The Natural Departure

One member of the band, Ben Lovett, has defended the decision to end the hoedown and produce something new, describing Wilder Mind as a "natural departure" from their folk style. "We've had our standard line-up of instruments for the last six years and we felt like that was our palette, we started picking up other stuff," Lovett told NME. "It's a very natural departure from some of that rootsier stuff. "When we started out making the record there wasn't a template or a sound that we were trying to continue," he added, and that's the line which many people can respect. They could've easily churned out another folk-rock album to great success, but you have to commend Mumford & Sons on their ambition to dramatically change.
