3. It Was Made For Only $65,000
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg Nirvanas first album Bleach was made for a grand total of $606 which they borrowed from Soundgarden guitarist Chris Everman -- who subsequently toured with the band after its release. Its understandable that the band made their debut effort on a shoestring considering they werent actually the concert draw they later became. Having said that, youd think signing to a major label would increase your production budget, but that wasnt the case. Nevermind was recorded at the now defunct Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California. If youve seen Dave Grohls Sundance documentary on the famed studio, you may understand why Nevermind cost so little to make. It was a shabby, murky and dingy warehouse that passed itself off as a studio. Although its decor screamed renovation, it did manage to draw in the top acts of the time (Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash, Neil Young) simply because it boasted a magical live-room that was affordable to hire. So, consider this a reminder: big budgets do not guarantee success and improve your chances of an album becoming an instant classic.
