8. David Bowie Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_-RO9bkZv0 One of the original pioneers of the album-long concept within rock music, David Bowie adopted his now infamous 'Ziggy Stardust' persona in the early 1970's, stepping away from (or ahead of?) the success he had already garnered as plain old David. The concept for this truly timeless album is based upon the idea that planet Earth only has five years left, with Ziggy as a human manifestation of an alien race (obviously) trying to inspire some hope on our planet in these imaginably - and understandably - bleak times. Eventually destroyed by his own excesses (drugs and sex - once again - obviously), as well as his fans, there's certainly something very comforting in the theory that such human misgivings may in fact be universal.
