10 Times Fans Saved Imperfect Albums
1. ... And Justice For All - Metallica
It's one of the eternal mysteries in the rock field. Ever since its release in the late '80s, fans have turned it around and around in their heads, but will never crack the code. Even with years passed it, fans only have one real question: where the hell is the bass on And Justice for All?
As Metallica's last gasp of pure thrash metal, Justice suffers from the worst production of any (well almost any) Metallica record, with the drums and guitars being brought to the front with very little bottom end.
Many have speculated that the band intentionally turned the bass down as a way of hazing newcomer Jason Newsted, who was brought in to fill the unfillable shoes of Cliff Burton after the bassist passed away in a bus accident.
Though Newsted may have gotten a raw deal in the studio the first time around, fans have always stuck by his side as the years have gone on. Ever since the band put it out, fans have been passing around versions of the album that have the bass tracks intact, which made for a much more raw experience whenever you strapped on the headphones.
Whether you call it And Justice for Jason or And Jason for All, this is the version of the album that could have left a firm exclamation point on Metallica's hardcore thrash period.
