10 Times Fans Saved Imperfect Albums
4. Damn - Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar has one of the most solid discographies in all of hip hop. Whereas most of his contemporaries have that one artistic fumble in their catalog, Lamar has never really struck out and has continued to show different sides of himself with every subsequent release. Even though not every album is flawless, Damn has always felt like a decompression from Lamar after the genius of To Pimp a Butterfly.
After half a decade of genius work under his belt, Damn is Kendrick at his most transparent, which tends to be either a hit or a miss with fans. Though this album clearly has a story to tell, many fans felt that the plot was meandering.
That is, until they found out they were playing it in the wrong order. Ever since it was released, fans have speculated that the entire project would have made for a much more fulfilling listen if the tracks were reversed.
It's initially a fun theory for people to think about, but Lamar's record label actually ended up re-releasing the entire album with the tracks in reverse for fans to consume. As much as this would look like a petty cash grab, the album does come together a lot better, with the opening skit of Lamar getting gunned down feeling much more pointed at the end of the album.
Lamar doesn't really have a bad album in him, but Damn is one of those projects that took a little more polish to be considered finished.
