"I am going to be the Tupac of product... I'm gonna be bigger than Walmart."
During a radio interview in 2013, Kanye west made the above proclamation, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. This came on the heels of his announcement that he was moving on from his contract with Nike (in which he designed a couple of sneakers, but received no royalties) to form one with Adidas, in which he'd be making more money. So what exactly does Tupac have to do with sneakers? Is Kanye saying that Tupac is the greatest rapper of all time, and that he's going to be the greatest shoe designer of all time? Because that doesn't seem like the Kanye we all know. (The Kanye we all know would say that Kanye is the greatest rapper of all time.) This statement is made even muddier by the fact that Kanye was overheard dissing Tupac's musicianship just a year later at a gala in Los Angeles, supposedly asserting that "Tupac wasn't no musician, he was an actor" and "the most overrated rapper in history" before getting all riled up that someone would dare compare his music to that of Tupac. So using that little nugget, it would seem Kanye wants to be an overrated shoe designer who's bad at rapping and occasionally appears in films.
