10 Times Musicians Trolled Their Audience
7. Highway Star - Deep Purple
When compared to the other British hard rockers of the day, Deep Purple were known as the most sophisticated musical collective. Whereas most bands assembled 3 minute riff medleys in their songs, these guys were fully formed musicians who would most likely spend hours fine tuning their sound to the nth degree. Then again, inspiration can come from all sorts of places.
As the band were coming up with new material on the road, they begrudgingly decided to allow press on their tour bus. Once the reporters pressed them about their writing process, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore sarcastically hunched over his guitar and proceeded to play one note while staring out the window, attempting to write a song on the spot.
Ironically enough, the driving rhythm that Blackmore hit upon seemed perfect for the band to base their new song around. After a few minutes, the band had a basic skeleton for a relentless hard rocker that seem to conjure up images of a car speeding down a highway. Once it entered the studio, Blackmore's initial paparazzi trolling turned into "Highway Star," one of the band's biggest hits. Trolling can be a devillish art form, but it can also be a gateway to writing your best material.
