10 Times Rock Bands Trolled You

8. Weezer - Africa

In 2017, a teenage fan called Mary Klym requested every day for Weezer to cover Africa by Toto in the #WeezerCoverAfrica campaign.

In May 2018, rumours of a new cover single being on the way got fans believing in the power of the meme. Unlucky for them, Weezer had covered Rosanna - the wrong Toto song.

Thankfully, Weezer trolled their fans once more by actually releasing Africa one week later. They listened, and fans listened back as thanks.

Africa hit no. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was their biggest hit since 2005. A video parodying their 1994 hit Undone (The Sweater Song) featuring Weird Al Yankovic also stirred the pot.

Just when fans thought the Africa era was over, Weezer dropped a surprise covers album the following year in January 2019. The Teal Album featured similar 1980s covers to Africa, such as Eurythmics and A-ha. As one last final twist in the trolling tale, Rosanna did not feature on the Teal Album despite being track that started this run of success.

Weezer continue to perform multiple covers at their set to this day, in an October 2019 set they performed a whopping seven covers. It is safe to say fans are not even sure if this joke is over yet, or if it is even a joke anymore.
