10 Times Rock Bands Trolled You
3. Liz Phair - Liz Phair
Female empowerment was a huge theme for Liz Phair, and this continued when she reflected on motherhood and family in 1998 for her third album Whitechocolatespaceegg. While not as successful as her previous efforts, Phair was settling into an intellectual and dedicated crowd of listeners who had matured with her.
Fast-forward to 2003 and Liz Phair is ready to release her fourth album.
Her label doesn’t like it, so requests if she can work with production team The Matrix, who had worked young stars such as Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears. Suddenly, Phair is thrust into a world of teen-pop, and her heartfelt album tracks clash with tracks straight out of your sister’s favourite movie as a teenager.
There is nothing wrong with women in their thirties appealing to teenagers - popstars do it all the time. But it is a garish mix of the glitzy pop rock singles Why Can’t I and Extraordinary clashing with stories of being a single mother such as in the beautiful Little Digger.
While success came her way including her biggest hit yet with Why Can't I, Phair could not regain her old fans back until recent years, despite returning to her old sound for subsequent albums.
