10 Totally Cheesy Songs (That Are Still Awesome)

1. Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us

An emphatic, confident drum fill ushers in this total anthem of cheese, in which the synthesisers - all of them - sparkle in a dreamlike haze, and the bass-powered verse throbs with pure heart.

Grace Slick's vocals are slightly off-putting - there's a weird, indefinable quality to the verses that sounds almost too goofy, too Trey Parker. "They say we're cer-azy!" she sings, with a bit too much musical theatre, but the sky-scraping chorus washes the weirdness, and indeed everything, away. It's a joyous declaration of love, and yes it obviously was written to cash in on a movie, but it's just so romantic and devoid of cynicism.

It's a song about falling in love that is in itself impossible not to fall in love with. It's a song your mother probably sings along to when she's half-cut, that you remember listening to in the back of your car, a song so powerful that it makes you question what it even means to have "discerning " taste. You know, listening to it, that it is deeply, deeply uncool - but so what?

It soars, it elevates, it opens up a skyline of possibilities - it's honestly magic, the very reason music exists.
