10 Truly Terrible Albums By Legendary Artists
1. In Through The Out Door - Led Zeppelin
The final studio album from Led Zeppelin, this is one that is loved by very few of their fans; possibly only the odds-and-ends collection, 'Coda', is more disliked. The fact that the album performed so well in the charts around the world bears no relation to its quality - a hardcore fan base will unflinchingly buy everything you throw at them, good or bad.
Released in 1979, Zep had been through some negative experiences, particularly singer Robert Plant, whose young son had died recently. The sombre mood seems to have influenced the recording process; the resultant record is a joyless affair - some might also suggest song-less.
Jimmy Page and John Bonham had been dealing with various substance issues, and with their dependability in question, they took a back seat during the recording, leaving Plant and bass player John Paul Jones as the dominant force.
This looks to have been a major mistake, as the record sounds unlike any other Zep album, being dominated by Jones' keyboards and some seriously uninspired songwriting from Plant, whose lyrics were particularly singled-out for vicious criticism.
Every great band is allowed a misstep, however, and given the mighty legacy of Zep, they can be forgiven this one.
