10 Truly Terrible Albums By Legendary Artists
2. Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request
Released in 1967 at the height of flower power and psychedelia, 'Satanic Majesties' is unlike any other album the band have recorded. Not as universally loathed by their fans as other entries on this list are by their respective fan-bases, it is still a strong divider of opinion amongst the Stones faithful.
The obvious criticism is the fact that the Stones sound like they are jumping on the Sgt Pepper bandwagon - their tough, blues style abandoned for a druggy haze of psychedelic vapidity.
Mick Jagger himself has dismissed the album as being one of their worst with little to commend it, acknowledging the role of 'chemical assistance' in the recording process, to the detriment of the final product. Keith Richards has also said that there were only two decent songs at best.
On the plus side, the aftermath of its release saw the band reassess their direction, pull things together and go on to make the best four albums of their career, from 'Beggars Banquet' through to 'Exile On Main Street'.
If the only purpose 'Satanic' served was to reset the Stones' rock'n'roll compass then perhaps in some ways that must stand as its sole redeeming feature.
