10 Underrated Albums By Huge Bands
5. Bleach - Nirvana (1989)
When someone mentions Nirvana or Kurt Cobain, the mind immediately jumps to a crowded, dimly lit gymnasium, with a bunch of youths moshing out, to the definitive anthem for adolescence. Nevermind represents grunge and the legacy of the band who spearheaded the movement.
But it's wide spread popularity has had the effect of eclipsing Nirvana's debut album, Bleach. This record sounds nothing like Nevermind, it's far rawer, it's far darker and it god damn is it enjoyable.
Part of the wild difference in sound can be attribute to the lack of Dave Grohl and the presence of Chad Channing on the drums. The two have distinctly different approaches. Grohl could pound the hell out of the drum kit, but also knew how to keep things loose. There was an incredible fluidity to his ferocious technique.
Channing was more direct, he wasn't as flashy and there was more urgency to his timing. It's not a criticism, it just resulted in a different dynamic. His technique seemed to drive Cobain to write more intensive, metal oriented guitar riffs. This might be squeezed into the grunge category, but really it's a straight metal album. Kurt Cobain doing metal... , what's not to like?
