10 Underrated Hard Rock Albums Of The 1990s
2. The Spaghetti Incident? - Guns N' Roses
The Spaghetti Incident?, released in 1993, was Guns N' Roses fifth studio album, but is often left out of some fans lists of the band's releases, due to it being an album composed entirely of covers (many would argue their last studio album of the 'classic' era was Use Your Illusion II). It also came at a time when the band was ready to implode - drug abuse and other conflicts had led to the departure of guitarist Izzy Stradlin, and as a result, the album was the last studio release for 15 years.
Despite all of that though, the album has its merits, and in some cases actually improves upon some of the original tracks. It still retains that classic Guns N' Roses rawness and the band do make their songs their own, with critics on its release comparing it to Appetite For Destruction.
'Since I Don't Have You' features a great opening solo from Slash, followed by some great riffs that hark back to the classic rock n roll era, while 'You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory' is a great tribute to Johnny Thunders, with all of the instruments on the track played by Duff McKagan. In contrast, the cover of Nazareth's 'Hair Of The Dog' is actually more hair-raising that the original, with a faster tempo and some incredibly high vocals by Axl Rose.
It should also be said that rhythm guitarist Gilby Clarke did a stirling job on his only studio release with the band, while attempting to fill the shoes of Izzy Stradlin.
