10 Underrated Hard Rock Bands Of The 70's

9. Mott The Hoople

As the 70's were turning a corner, the focus of hard rock acts started to shift from blues to glam rock. Thanks to acts like T. Rex and David Bowie, bands could not escape going up on stage without sporting a bit of makeup in their presentation. Though there were many great songs coming from bands like Sweet and Slade, Mott the Hoople has stood up as being glam rock's most enduring hellraisers.

The band had originally started off as a straight-ahead rock act but quickly felt the musical tide shifting beneath their feet. After hooking up with the glam rockers of the day, the band scored a massive hit with "All the Young Dudes," which was written by David Bowie. While the band were on top and even sold out theaters with Queen as the opening act, there was still some skepticism from rock fans that the group was nothing more than an idea in the mind of Bowie.

On the other hand, the band's mix of hard rock riffs with the sounds of British pop made them one of the pioneers of the hair metal scene, with bands like Twisted Sister and Def Leppard picking up on the band's songwriting techniques. Regardless of celebrity assistance, Mott the Hoople are one of best hard rock acts for those who don't mind a bit of glitter.
