10 Underrated Hard Rock Bands Of The 70's
8. Hawkwind
At the start of the 70's, the lingering sounds of the Flower generation were still prominent in the hard rock scene. Whether it was the sounds of pop music or the hard-edged side of rock, the entirety of the musical sphere still seemed to be drenched in acid-soaked guitars and psych-rock fusions.
While a band like Hawkwind certainly fit the mold of acid rockers, the band had their foot still firmly planted in the world of hard rock. Though the songs across the band's discography were still drenched in the purple haze of psychedelia, there was no denying the authentic crunch that was put into their guitar riffs. With lyrics discussing more interstellar topics and various sonic experiments, the band were also pioneering the genre of space rock which would emerge a few years after their inception.
Hawkwind is also now famously known as the former band of Lemmy Kilmister, who would eventually leave the group to form his own hard rock outfit Motorhead. Though more legendary accolades have been given to their snaggle-toothed former bassist, Hawkwind deserve much more recognition than simply being a sidenote in the Motorhead story. Armed with distortion and grand ambitions, Hawkwind is the sound of Jimi Hendrix's trippiness mixed with Black Sabbath's power.
