10 Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of The '90s
1. Love Hate Love - Alice In Chains
Out of all the great grunge bands emerging from Seattle, Alice in Chains seemed to be one of the outliers amongst their fellow Seattlites. While other bands were stringing together riffs in line with classic rock, these guys were pulling from psychedelic and metal influences to create their glorious wall of noise. Many may point to songs off of Dirt for the band's best material, but if you want to get a taste of how terrifying this band can get, just turn on "Love Hate Love."
Instead of the insane grooves of songs like "Man in a Box" or "Them Bones," this song's plodding tempo pummels across your skin with every single chord. That backing track would have been unsettling enough on its own, but the real terror comes in when Layne Staley starts to sing. The way that he reaches to the very top of his register makes him sound almost like a torturer trying to lure in his next captive.
AOC may be known for their dual harmony work, but Staley is the sole star of this show, as he spends 6 minutes tearing apart the audience through the raw power in his throat. Things ended up getting much bigger on later releases, but "Love Hate Love" still stands as one of the most haunted vocal performances of the entire decade.
