10 Underrated Hard Rock Songs Of The '90s

7. Platypus (I Hate You) - Green Day

Most people probably wouldn't consider Green Day a hard rock band by any stretch of the imagination. From the band's pop-punk beginnings to their mainstream rock approach down the road, their songs aren't exactly competing with the likes of Metallica and Led Zeppelin. On the other hand, the band offered a little something for every brand of rock fan on Nimrod, including one of their most brutal cuts.

Set at one of the fastest tempos they have undertaken, "Platypus (I Hate You)" almost sounds like a long lost metal tune on first listen. While keeping that same tempo, Billie Joe Armstrong gives the listener one of the most scathing insult barrages in the band's catalog. We may not know who prompted all of this anger from Green Day, but they are clearly pissed off beyond belief.

All of the vitriol is saved for the breakdown though, where we return to the metal sounding riffs and Armstrong saving his most vulgar insults for last, calling this person every expletive he can think of off the top of his head. The song may have been given a bit of a strange title, but with a song this forceful, it's clear that Green Day mean every word of that parenthetical subtitle.
