10 Underrated Linkin Park Songs
6. My December - Hybrid Theory (b-side)
Of all of Linkin Park's mainline albums, not much from Hybrid Theory could be considered underrated. I mean, if you're looking at a record that has been certified Diamond and is considered one of the most successful albums of the '00s, there's hardly any more diamonds in the rough to uncover. You're going to need to dig a little deeper...even it means going off the track list entirely.
When compiling the tracks for Hybrid Theory, My December was one of the few that didn't make the track list, because presumably it wouldn't have fit in with the flow of the rest of the record. And while that's not wrong, this is a good example of how a band like Linkin Park can scale things back when they want to, with Chester being the star of the show here alongside some dark instrumentation in the background.
Whereas most of the other tracks on the album are fairly straight and to the point, My December is looking to set up a certain atmosphere during the time it has, letting that sense of melancholy sink in as you listen to Chester's words flow by. On most of Hybrid Theory, it already felt like you were hearing the innermost thoughts of what the band were going through. Once you look at the B-sides, this is what it feels like to actually be inside their head.
