10 Unusual 1970s Lead Singers

2. Ian Curtis, Joy Division (Est. 1976)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVc29bYIvCM Ian Curtis had the air of a kid who always sat alone on the school bus. You wouldn€™t sit with him unless it was necessary, but you suspected knowing him would unearth great secrets. Obviously none of us can ever know the complexities of Curtis€™s inner life, but we are gifted by the records he left behind. His ghoulish baritone itself is otherworldly€” the sound of a voice you hear in an empty house. His performance style was jarring in its contrasts. While delivering verses his eyes pointed at the floor, lids nearly closed, eyebrows turned sadly up. But when away from the mic, Curtis€™s head snapped up and he€™d dance like you€™ve never seen. His arms whirled and chopped at dangerous speeds, while his head could dodge bullets. It was like Manchester karate. His very atoms seemed to jitter and bounce as he sweated through his button-ups. Fellow members of Joy Division have repeatedly attested that no drugs were involved in his reaching this trance state. It was just Curtis losing himself.
