10 Unusual Music Collaborations That Should've Never Worked
7. Janelle Monáe & Brian Wilson - Dirty Computer
Both of these artists are extremely forward thinking. Brian Wilson effectively changed the face of popular music with his innovative compositions and vocal arrangements alongside The Beach Boys. Janelle Monáe has been making some of the most innovative and conceptual pop music for the best part of a decade now.
It’s always thrilling to hear artists of different generations coming together and essentially breaking down the walls of genre. The title track from Janelle Monae’s third album is also its opener and it sets the mood perfectly for the rest of the run time.
In just two minutes the song combines Brian Wilson’s classic vocal layering and arrangements with elements of neo soul, funk, rnb and pop. Most artists wouldn’t be able to juggle this many different influences in a whole album, let alone a single track.
It sounds futuristic, yet organic and classic at the same time. That’s a quality both artists posses. This song is a manifestation of two parallel generations finally converging, and it’s perfect.
