9. Try, Try, Try - Smashing Pumpkins

Billy Corgan and friends have never been the most cheerful of bands, but their video for Try, Try, Try was a particularly bleak moment in the band's history. The video features drug abuse, overdosing and infant mortality, and in typical understated fashion, the band's iconic bald singer proclaimed it just a "simple love story" about a couple trying to get by in a tough world. But the colourful violence and scenes of open drug use were never going to appeal to mainstream media channels, and the band were forced to send out a heavily edited version to be screened. Incidentally, the video was directed by Jonas Akerlund, who also made The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up." So, we could have perhaps predicted the impact this one might have had.
