1. Oh Yeah ('Chick, Chicka-Chicka...')
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU0Ypufo6BM Maybe this is equal parts a good and bad thing, but if it weren't for Hughes' seemingly arbitrary selection of this piece of Swiss electronica, we might never have been able to confidently describe the moon as "beautiful." That is by way of the culturally-pervasive and wholly tongue-in-cheek "Oh Yeah" by Yello. Which is also to say that the Simpsons' Duff Man would be without a theme song. While this song isn't the usual fare of what can be expected from a John Hughes soundtrack, it does effectively capture the comedic spirit of the film Ferris Bueller Bueller's Day Off, and has its subliminal underpinnings in the fact that it cues up as we first see Cameron's dad's precious luxury car, an object of material lust that is as meaningless as it ultimately becomes. Furthermore, Yello as a group is actually fronted by a millionaire heir/industrialist/professional gambler named Dieter Meier (who comes off as a sort of real-life Carter Pewterschmidt) - which Hughes must've known. After all, what better way to exaggerate decadent wealth than with the baritone gibberish of an eccentric millionaire with EDM tendencies. Unsurprisingly, if you check out any other songs in Yello's catalogue, you'll find that "Oh Yeah" isn't the only goofy one in the bunch. "Rubberbandman" contains some pretty far-fetched audio samples, and leans deep on Meier's ridiculous vocals. There are a few exceptions - for instance, "Vicious Games," which provides a sort of euro-disco foundation to some pretty lush guitar and vocal arrangements - but in most cases Yello is hard to take with a straight face. (Which is where the Dream Academy comes in.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi6sgW_y7Uc Did you enjoy this article? Remember to share it, and leave a comment in the comments thread below.
