10 Weirdest Cover Songs In Rock Music History
8. Baker Street - Foo Fighters
Rock and roll has certainly come a long way from the days of AM radio rock. Around the time that bands like Led Zeppelin were still storming across the land, hearing the likes of Cat Stevens giving you a mellow version of rock and roll felt jarring for those who were itching to hear some heavy riffs. We had grown as rock fans since the '70s though, and the Foo Fighters were looking to recontextualize those old hits from back in the day.
Along with the classic tracks that they recorded during the sessions for the Colour and the Shape, Dave Grohl also decided to knock out some covers of his favorite pop songs from his youth, with Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty being right at the top of the list. If you listen to the original, this is by no means something that Dave should be involved in, until you hear him take the ballad parts of the song and hype them up like they're on steroids.
Around the verses, Dave is pretty faithful to the original downbeat mood, only to have the earworm sax line be played on a distortion driven guitar instead. Given that this went over so well all the way back in the '90s, it makes sense that we trusted this same guy to rock-ify the Peanuts theme during the holidays a few years back.
