10 Weirdest Rock Songs By Legendary Artists

8. Please Mr. Gravedigger - David Bowie

It would make sense that David Bowie's first introduction to the world began with Space Oddity. After being heralded as just another novelty record, this was the kind of song that set up the Starman's persona and made us watch his every move for the next few years. If you thought that this was the extent of his odd streak though, you have no idea what you're in for when you hear his real debut album.

Although David himself has since disowned this record as an embarrassing first attempt, Please Mr. Gravedigger was already a good indicator of his willingness to experiment. Whereas most of this album has an almost vaudeville slant to it, this has almost no instruments to speak of, with the only sounds being a thunderstorm and the sound of David's voice as he tells a gravedigger what to do with his body once he has passed on.

Coming right at the tail end of the album, this almost feels more like an attempt at sound design than an actual song, like this is Bowie's open mic at a beat poetry club. When you strip away the gimmick-y side of this conversation though, this was just a sign of the kind of things that we would be in for in the era of the Thin White Duke. This was just Bowie's first offering to planet Earth, and he had new worlds to conquer before we were ready to see his potential.
