10 Weirdest Rock Songs By Legendary Artists

5. Like Spinning Plates - Radiohead

In the years since making Kid A, Radiohead have opened up the playing field for any other kind of music they want to make. After pivoting into the world of electronic music, the new sonic directions they had were too much for one record to handle, with Amnesiac being some of the best leftovers from the original Kid A sessions. This album still has some weird things going for it though, down to having an entire song in reverse.

That's not to say that Like Spinning Plates has some weird backwards messages in it or anything. In fact, this song isn't really supposed to exist, originally being a version of I Will, which would turn up on the next album Hail to the Thief. During the sessions to record the song, the band kept getting frustrated because the recording wasn't coming together, until someone had the bright idea of playing the entire thing backwards.

Being much more drawn to the lethargic sound of the synths in reverse, Thom Yorke wrote an entirely new song from the ground up over the instrumental, which makes the whole track feel like you're floating on air as you listen to it. We did eventually get a version of I Will as well, which means that Radiohead have written a song that works just as well backwards as it does forward. It shouldn't work, and yet anything seems possible when it's in the hands of these art rock cyborgs.
