10 Weirdest Rock Songs By Legendary Artists
4. Stupidmop - Pearl Jam
As grunge started to spread around the world, you couldn't have wished for a better gig than being in Pearl Jam. Taking the sounds of '70s rock and bringing in a much more organic touch, Eddie Vedder and co. sounded like the band that would take over the world, with one killer song after another on tracks like Vs. Not everyone was in love with the idea of growing up too quickly though, and Stupidmop off of Vitalogy made it seem like they were intentionally trying to shrink their audience.
For anyone who comes to Pearl Jam for the arena sized anthems, you're probably going to want to skip this track, bringing the entire album to a halt at the end. Being more of a sound collage than an actual song, the origin of this track was assembled from when Eddie Vedder was recording sounds of mentally unstable patients on his television, which turn up every so often in the mix. The real star of the show here seems to be the production, looking to paint some sort of horror scenario in your mind, from the chaotic drums that wash over your speakers to different screeches of guitar that pop up every now and again in the mix.
Whereas Soundgarden always had an artsy side and Nirvana was shunning the idea of fame, this felt like Pearl Jam's attempt to see who their real fans were, weeding out the fairweather listened and seeing who was willing to stick around after making this avant garde experiment. While weirder records like No Code would follow, this was the first time where fans started to be genuinely concerned about where their favorite band was headed.
