10 Weirdest Songs By Legendary Artists
4. Glitter Freeze - Gorillaz
Any fan going into a Gorillaz project knows to leave any expectations at the door. Damon Albarn is always about evolving the band along with the different illustrations from Jamie Hewlett, and that means using his guest stars almost like instruments unto themselves, putting them in just the right spot so they can do the most damage. For all of the insanity that goes on on Plastic Beach though, Glitter Freeze was the one moment where you didn't even need lyrics to feel on edge.
Since most of this album revolves around climate change and how things are starting to feel artificial to most of us, this is probably the closest we get on the record to a pure existential meltdown, with most of the song being driven by a glitchy keyboard that keeps driving along throughout the track. While everything starts off a lot more cartoony with the keyboard playing a fairly basic melody, the percussion behind it as well as the voiceover that comes halfway through the track makes the whole thing start to really sink in, as hell starts to freeze over on Plastic Beach.
Using different power players from the world of post punk like Mark E Smith from the Fall, there's a much more apocalyptic sound to this track than anything else on the record, being the first moment where we start to feel the consequences of what happens when the earth turns against us. By the end of the song, that little keyboard isn't just a cool effect anymore. It's a distress signal.
