10 Worst Band Breakups Of All Time

6. Rage Against the Machine

There's something to be said about the way a band can make various individuals click musically. These artists may have polar opposite personalities offstage, but when it comes time to pick up their instruments, it feels like they share brain cells. The music may be front and centre, but in Rage Against the Machine's case, it might be better if you agree on at least a few other topics.

Throughout Rage's tenure, they were the most militant band of the era, with songs that served as sonic weapons against the corrupt political figures of the day. Just when it seemed like they could enact some real change, the band ended up falling apart due to the fracture between the band and frontman Zack de la Rocha.

Though the band still agreed on the musical styles and political messages, things went sour when talking about ways to implement them, with members almost coming to blows over something as simple as a T-shirt design.

After attempting to ease the tension with the covers album Renegades, Rage never fully recovered, with the band members folding themselves into Audioslave and Zack de la Rocha retreating into an almost hermit-like seclusion.

The tides have been shifting towards a reunion as of late, but for the entire '00s era, things looked pretty dark for one of rock's most pointed voices.
