10 Worst Hard Rock Albums Ever Made
1. Lulu - Metallica and Lou Reed
A band as seminal as Metallica doesn't typically find themselves in the running of worst albums, let alone twice. In their second appearance, the band's collaborative effort with Lou Reed on Lulu is one of the most poorly thought out experiments to ever come out of the rock world. While other albums may be bad on principle, this is the one that we all expected to be good but never was able to get out of first gear.
It's not like this doesn't make sense either, with Lou Reed's pedigree with the Velvet Underground setting the standard for what punk, art rock, and yes, metal would become after the '60s. The awkward fit at least had potential, but what transpired was one of the biggest failings in either of the artists' careers. The members of Metallica seem to be in top form as they pump out their riffs, but Lou Reed's stoic recitations of poetry are severely out of place, as well as downright cringey when Hetfield joins him for "I AM THE TABLE!!!."
Both of these artists are great at what they do, but Lulu sounds like an attempt to blend their styles together, only to have them awkwardly compete with each other throughout the duration of every song. The good intentions were certainly there in the beginning, but the proper execution of these intentions were something not even the strongest musical minds could tackle.
