10 Worst Hard Rock Cover Songs Of All Time
3. About a Girl - Puddle of Mudd
As the '00s started turning over a new leaf, Puddle of Mudd was one of the reasons why post-grunge died an ugly death. With only the Foo Fighters holding up as a decent post-grunge act, these Nirvana wannabes became one of the kings of butt rock, complete with one of the most nasal singers the rock world has ever known in Wes Scantlin. Even with over two decades under his belt, Scantlin ended up trading in his whine for one of the most erratically hilarious covers in recent memory.
Appearing on Sirius XM to perform an acoustic showcase, the band's decision to cover Nirvana's About a Girl turned into a disaster immediately. The music itself sounds pretty decent, but when Scantlin goes to open his mouth, what transpires can only be described as a dying cat that is constantly being given electro-shock treatment.
It's not like the original version of the song was perfect, but the frayed nature of Cobain's voice at least sounded natural in his version of the tune. As opposed to being calm and collected, this song just makes Scantlin look like he's struggling to hit every single high note, with agonized poop faces added in for good measure. There have been plenty of covers that have disappointed over the years, but this one is really close to being so bad it's good.
