10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The 1970s

6. Monkberry Moon Delight - Paul McCartney

Worst Offender: "Well I know my banana is older than the rest and my hair is a tangled beretta, but I leave my pyjamas to Billy Budapest and I don't get the gist of your letter"

Paul McCartney's RAM was one of the first signs that the Beatles could still be good as separate entities. Set as an ode to the pastoral life, the entire record feels very organic as it gives us a taste of country, folk, pop, and yes...hard rock. While Paul is a master of melody, things can get a little too weird when trying to fill the words to "Monkberry Moon Delight."

Following a weird melody going back and forth, McCartney strings words together that sound pretty but have no real internal meaning once put together. For as much as phrases like "piano up my nose" may sound good at the time, it still doesn't make it sensible once you hear it in context. He's not done there though, with the rest of the song talking about everything from dreadfuls cantatas to the soothing sounds of tomato. Even as we reach the end of the song, we aren't even told what a Monkberry Moon Delight is, much less how it fits with the rest of the song.

McCartney certainly makes up for the lyrical shortcomings with his feral vocal performance, but that doesn't automatically mean that the song suddenly means something. RAM still holds up as a classic today, and "Monkberry Moon Delight" is still there exciting us, shaking us, and baffling the hell out of us all at the same time.
