10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The 1970s
4. I Think I'm Going Bald - Rush
Worst Offender: "I walk down vanity fair, Memory lane everywhere, Wall Street shuffles there, Dressed in flowing hair"
As far as rock music goes, the lyrics of most of Rush's material have always been above average. Once the band acquired drum extraordinaire and resident intellectual Neil Peart, their songs went from the standard rock and roll of the day into full-on stories about everything from philosophical prophecies to great battles from the Renaissance period. However, you can't make a transition that drastic without a few cringey moments along the way.
Though the band's third release Caress of Steel is unfairly judged for being too proggy for its own good, the real doofy elements of the album come from the opposite side of the spectrum. While "Bastille Day" kicks down the door of this album in a fantastic way, "I Think I'm Going Bald" has to be one of the weirdest lyrics that has ever been associated with Rush.
As a slight jab at touring partners KISS, this songs plays on the song "Goin Blind" by talking about guitarist Alex Lifeson's fear of eventually losing his luscious locks to male-pattern baldness. Rush had moved on to much more ambitious projects, but this is one of those subtle in-jokes that's much more funny for the people involved than for the people listening. Keep watch though...this wasn't the last time KISS' music gave the rock world horrid lyrics.
