10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The 2000s
7. St. Anger - Metallica
Worst Offender: "You flush it out/you flush it out"
The dawn of the new millennium was not a good time for any Metallica fan. With Jason Newsted quitting the band and Lars Ulrich taking Napster to court, what used to be thrash's greatest band was suddenly turning into pampered rock stars in the eyes of the public. Instead of bringing them back from the break, St. Anger ended up being the sacrificial lamb to break off the band's cycle of horrible decisions.
Instead of writing in an organic way, the band's approach to lyrics invited every band member into the fold, with every song sounding like it was generated by robots. While the title track does have the strongest message out of the bunch, the sound of the chorus makes the idea of letting your anger out seem downright painful.
As the band underwent therapy for personality issues, the idea of letting out your anger in between blasts of "you flush it out" end up sounding comical when played back to back. Metallica were on their way to a good idea, but having a line as sick as "I'm madly in anger with you" alongside "you flush it out" is inexcusable. There were plenty of good ideas to be had in the St. Anger sessions, but as far as this lyric is concerned, it's best to keep with the toilet analogy and flush it down the drain.
