10 Worst Hard Rock Lyrics Of The 2000s
4. Down With The Sickness - Disturbed
Worst Offender: The entire bridge.
For as much trash as nu metal wrought on the rock scene, Disturbed seemed to be the one band doing something new with the genre. With David Draiman's more histrionic vocal delivery, the band was an edgier alternative to the rest of the hard rock going on at the time. Even though "Down with the Sickness" has become a meme nowadays for the "ooh-wah-ahh-ahh-ahh," all of the goodwill from this song falls away during the breakdown.
After hearing Draiman talk about the proverbial sickness of anger that dwells inside of you, we get a completely unwarranted breakdown section in which he seems to reenact a repressed childhood memory of him getting physically abused by his mother. Up until this point, the lyrics have been pretty universal when talking about this sickness, but zeroing in on this very real issue makes the entire song feel uncomfortable by comparison.
While Draiman may have been trying to touch on a heavier topic than your typical rock song, this entire section of the track will more than likely bring up bad oppressed memories in the listener rather than point a way forward. Disturbed never really failed to live up to their namesake, but this kind of lyrical structure is just going to make you sound extremely awkward rather than an edgy metalhead.
