10 WORST Metallica Songs Ever
5. Escape - Ride The Lightning
What the hell is this?! A song from Metallica's 80's heyday finding its way onto a WORST list? Compared to the questionable records that the band have made, surely nothing from the band's glory years should be considered a dud in their discography. At the same time, "Escape" is a song that deserves to be thrown away when set against the killer songs next to it.
While the band had a tight-as-hell tracklist for the album Ride the Lightning, they were told by their record company that they needed one more song to fill out the rest of the record. Completed in just 3 days, "Escape" is just a standard metal affair, with a generic chugging riff and an almost stadium rock chorus that seems out of place when placed against something like "For Whom the Bell Tolls."
This record is actually so reviled by the band themselves that they outright refused to play it for many years. When it was finally played onstage for the anniversary of Ride the Lightning, even James took a few jabs at the song before actually playing and throwing shade at the song again after saying "Do you love it?." This song is better than many bands could hope to be, but for a metal band at the top of their game, you could certainly do better.
