3. CeeLo - "Robin Williams"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfesrob8hW4 You say "tribute," I say "shameless cash grab." It's more than a little tacky to release a song about a deceased celebrity just to get attention. And as far as I can tell, that's exactly what CeeLo Green did. He had no personal connection with the comedian, and the lyrics have no real connection with him either. Despite his attempts to persuade us that this song is a genuine, heartfelt homage, it seems pretty apparent after a quick skim of the lyrics that CeeLo just needed a name to tie together his disparate thoughts about life and grief and laughter and whatever other vague notions he was feeling when he sat down to write this. Also, he really wanted you to forget about those charges of sexual assault that he had against him in 2014. During the course of attempts at heart-tugging, he name checks Bernie Mac, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John Belushi, and Richard Pryor. (Can you figure out which one of those names doesn't fit with the others and was included only as a rhyming device?) Oh, and did I mention that the music video for the song also doubles as an interactive endorsement for Google? Sad, indeed.
