9. Freedom - Rage Against The Machine
Out of all the brooding alternative rock acts of the early 90's, Rage Against the Machine were one of the few that had a definitive message to preach. From the first note of the band's debut record, you know that these guys are not messing around as they talk about the injustices of America. If you had any inkling that this band's fury was going to run out, "Freedom" comes on and sets fire to the entire place.
As soon as the drop-D riff from Tom Morello starts coming in, your hairs stand up on end, with Zack de la Rocha coming in with some of the most visceral vocal stabs of his career. Whereas the rest of the record had some great cuts like "Bombtrack" and "Know Your Enemy," this song is where every single element of their sound is turned up to its maximum level, with de la Rocha delivering what may be the band's mission statement: "Freedom, yeah right."
While not really in tune with the sound of the grunge scene, this record sent Rage off on a whirlwind career of epic proportions. Though many may have seen it as a good palette cleanser from the alt-rock scene, no one could have predicted how much more rage was still around the corner.
